Doyle Gertjejansen has been producing abstract works for over three decades. Most of the works have focused on images that combine very complex layers of abstract mark making and imagery drawn from the historical development of pictorial space in painting. While his work usually comprises large scale mixed media works on canvas, he also produces drawings, monotypes, and occasionally sculpture. His most recent work focuses more clearly on the core issues and language of abstract painting, exploring the dialogue between arbitrary and prescribed visual events with greater emphasis on simple forms in a flat field.
He has shown in numerous one person and group exhibitions and is included in public, private, and corporate collections throughout the United States and abroad. He was a recipient of an National Endowment for the Arts/Southern Arts Federation Fellowship in painting in 1996, a Louisiana Division of the Arts Fellowship for painting and works on paper in 1999, and received the Phi Kappa Phi South Central Artists Award, also in 1996.
He holds a BS degree in art from Mankato State University and an MFA degree in Painting and Art History from the University of Minnesota. For most of his professional career he has resided in New Orleans, where he has served as a board member with the New Orleans Contemporary Arts Center and the Arts Council of New Orleans. |
