Loyola Jazz Underground Series Presents Ellis Marsalis

Ellis Marsalis, the celebrated jazz musician and patriarch of his noted musical family, will head an ensemble of Loyola University jazz students Thursday, March 21 at 7:30 p.m. at the Old U.S. Mint.

The program will feature classic jazz standards as well as original compositions, the university announced today. According to the announcement:

Loyola Student Sexually Assaulted in Campus Parking Garage

A Loyola university student was sexually assaulted in a campus parking garage by an acquaintance this past Friday, the university announced that evening in an e-mail sent by the campus police department.

The woman was assaulted at approximately 4:12 a.m. on Jan. 15 in the stairwell of the Freret St. garage, according to the university's statement. Loyola says the victim has identified her attacker, and the New Orleans Police Department is handling the investigation.

Taylor Foundation Pledges $1M-Plus to Loyola

The Patrick F. Taylor Foundation has pledged $1.26 million in scholarship support to Loyola University for first-generation college students who live in Louisiana and demonstrate financial need.

The grant will provide seven $15,000 scholarships per year over the next 12 years. The first batch will be awarded in August.

Loyola Student's Anti-Obesity Effort Wins Grant

A Loyola University student has won a grant to help teach health care providers at a New Orleans area school counseling skills aimed at reducing childhood obesity.

The $4,000 grant from the American Nurse Practitioner Foundation is going to Monica Alleman, a student in Loyola's Doctor of Nursing Practice program.

Promising young opera singers from across the Gulf Coast will compete for the chance to perform on one of the world’s most prestigious stages at the Metropolitan Opera National Council District and Regional Auditions Jan. 5 and 6 at Loyola University.
