New Orleans, La. – BP has extra skimming vessels above the well site to recover the oil now spilling freely into the Gulf. It's also hooking up a production vessel to another part of the blown-out well. Once the new containment cap is attached, pressure readings will track the rate of oil gushing out of the well. The cap might be able to close off the leak. BP vice president Kent Wells says the system should be operational by mid-week, but is only a temporary solution.

New Orleans, La. – Mayor Landrieu has skipped the tradition of delivering the annual address after a year on the job. As Landrieu took the oath of office in early May, he was learning about a deficit he now says is $67 million dollars. And BP's oil spill was just beginning to unfold into the largest one in American history. He was just a few minutes into his speech at Xavier University when he talked about the disaster in the Gulf.

New Orleans, La. – Mayor Landrieu was sworn into office about two months ago as the oil crisis was unfolding. In his first State of the City address, he's warning that Hurricane Katrina rebuilding money is almost gone. And the economic fallout from the oil spill on city coffers is still being tabulated.

"Our mission is clear. Cap the hole. Capture the oil. Clean the coast. Compensate the families and get back to work. This is an American tragedy and it requires a robust American response."

Andrew Condon and his wife Megan came to New Orleans from Rhode Island for a vacation, and a chance to re-energize and refocus their lives. Megan convinced Andrew that an interview session at StoryCorps' booth set up outside the World War II museum would be a great forum for taking stock of their seven-year marriage, and a focal point for looking toward the future.

Courtney Theard's first day on the job as a cook at a Gretna country club turned into an unanticipated trial by fire. The 19-year-old New Orleans native reported for duty that first day last month ready to learn the ropes, but when the club's chef went home ill, he suddenly found himself responsible for turning out a luau-style dinner for a big party in the dining room.
