The Jefferson Parish public school system's desegregation task force will hold public meetings Monday and Tuesday.
NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune reports the meetings are being held to get public input on the system's compliance with its federal desegregation agreement. The deal requires racial diversity and equal school choices on both sides of the Mississippi River.
Task force leaders have charged that the 2012 closures of underperforming and sparsely enrolled schools disproportionately affected black students — and so violated terms of the court order. Task force head Margie Zeno has also argued that handing off Woodmere Elementary to a charter operator amounts to a closure.
Monday's meeting is at Granville T. Woods Elementary in Kenner. Tuesday's meeting is planned at L.W. Higgins High School in Marrero.
Both meetings are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
