Leonard Bernstein Centennial Celebration

Classical 104.9 FM & WWNO HD-2

American composer, conductor, arts advocate, educator and author Leonard Bernstein would've been 100 on Saturday.

Here at Classical 104.9 FM we've been honoring Bernstein this week, airing not only his original stage and concert pieces, but also some of his legendary recordings made as conductor of the New York Philharmonic and the Vienna Philharmonic.

We have some special programming coming up on Friday and Saturday:

FRIDAY, August 24

9 a.m. - 1 p.m.: "Classical New Orleans" presents a full morning of Bernstein recordings. Every single piece will feature either Bernstein's own music or his work as a conductor!

6 p.m. - 8 p.m.: Our local host James Arey presents two one-hour specials on Bernstein's music. The first hour features the Serenade for Violin and the Divertimento; the second hour will highlight West Side Story, Candide and On The Waterfront.

8 p.m.: "Exploring Music" concludes their week-long Bernstein Birthday Bash with a focus on Bernstein's "Mass"

SATURDAY, August 25

11:00 a.m.: Host Susan Sarandon presents a one-hour special "Leonard Bernstein: The Composer" from the series "Leonard Bernstein: An American Life"

James served as Classical Music Host and Music Director for WWNO from 1999-2007. He relocated to Atlanta with several WWNO staff members after Katrina, and, in 2007, he accepted a position as Music Director at KVNO in Omaha, Nebraska, where he coached young announcers, programmed, and hosted classical music until 2010.
