Officials are marking Martin Luther King Day in New Orleans. Events are scheduled throughout the day.
The official New Orleans memorial for the civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. starts at 9 a.m. on the steps of City Hall. After a program there concludes, officials will march more than a mile to the MLK memorial in Central City.
A few hours later, the Goodwork Network for business development will host a program called “Remembering the Dream.” It will be held at Roux Carre at 2000 Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard from 2 to 5 p.m. The new Central City venue is an open-air food court designed to be a business incubator for small and minority-owned businesses.
Today’s program features music and spoken word performances. Later, a panel discussion called “Reflections From The Bus” will be held, with two New Orleans Freedom Riders.
Starting at 5:30 p.m. is a three-hour social at the Rebellion Bar and Urban Kitchen on Camp Street. Proceeds will benefit groups for affordable energy and prison reform.
