With all that floodwater heading south, some may be concerned about the Port of New Orleans. Officials there are not worried.
Port President Gary LaGrange is confident the floods won’t affect port operations.
“The projections with the Army Corps of Engineers is we should be ok. And that’s usually the case anyway with all of the flood protection barriers that we have in place at Simmsport, the Old River structure, the Bonne Carre Spillway and Morganza, all three safety valves in three outlets that we have here in Louisiana," he said.
But LaGrange says some port workers have been hurt by the flooding.
“Certainly no more than three or four, maybe five, of the workers here at the port were affected, who worked for the actual port authority itself. How many on the terminals I’m not sure," he said. "But it was those people who live in the outlying areas who were prevented from getting into work. In a couple of instances, unfortunately, some of them lost all or a portion of their homes.”
LaGrange says projections call for normal cargo volumes.
