Urban League Expo Showcases New Orleans Schools

On Saturday morning, the Urban League held its ninth annual Schools Expo. Hundreds of families came out to the Superdome to learn about school options.

The Superdome is packed, with representatives from over 50 schools and dozens of community organizations. Families stop by tables to learn about each school.

Tye Davis has one priority: finding a school closer to home. She says her nine year old daughter spends almost three hours on the school bus every day.

"She gets out at 5:00, she don't gets home 'til almost 6:30, 7:00," Davis says. "She don't have time for anything, really. She does homework, she eats and go to bed."

Shawn James likes his kids' schools, but wants to see what else is out there.

"The schools they go to pretty good, but if you can get them a better education, why deny them?" he asks.

James says more than anything, it's important to feel out the school leaders.

"I mean it's basically, they can tell you anything about the school but it's all about meeting who the individual is who's gonna be dealing with your child," he says. "You know, you want to know who it is you leaving your child in the hands of," he says.

School enrollment ends February 27.
