Orleans School Board Names Interim Superintendent

The Orleans Parish School Board has appointed an interim superintendent.

Stan Smith served as the chief financial officer for the board since 2006. The board said Thursday that Smith will step in for Superintendent Darryl Kilbert, who officially retires June 30.

La. Colleges Face Deep Cuts in House Budget

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Louisiana's public colleges say they will be forced to make steep cuts next year if state senators agree to the version of the $25 billion budget passed by the House.

The governor's budget office says higher education would take cuts topping $200 million in the new fiscal year that begins July 1, under the House-approved budget.

Senators get their first look Monday at the House budget.

President Clinton Speaks to New Orleans High School Graduates

Former President Bill Clinton was the keynote speaker at the first New Orleans high school graduation ceremony for 37 students in an Urban League after-school education initiative. Special attention given during high school will continue throughout the students’ college years.

House Plans to Debate $25B Budget for Next Year

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — The Louisiana House expects to spend much of the day Thursday debating next year's $25 billion budget.

The spending plans would pay for agency operating expenses and programs in the new fiscal year that begins July 1.

At issue among conservative lawmakers is how much one-time money they want to patch into the budget, versus how deeply they want to cut. On the chopping block and most vulnerable to further reductions are health care services and public college programs.
