St. Charles Parish officials have ordered evacuation for all 53,000 residents as Tropical Storm Isaac's path moves west.
Parish spokeswoman Renee Simpson says the order was made Sunday evening because conditions are expected to worsen. It's the largest evacuation so far in southeast Louisiana, where 15 parishes are under a hurricane warning.
Administration Commissioner Paul Rainwater says state offices in all 15 affected parishes will be closed Monday.
Evacuation has begun on Louisiana's only inhabited barrier island as Tropical Storm Isaac's path moves west, and was ordered Monday for about 2,000 Plaquemines Parish residents.
Gov. Bobby Jindal called a state of emergency, suggesting people leave low-lying parts of 15 coastal parishes where the National Weather Service called a hurricane warning. He says that if Isaac remains a threat to Louisiana, he may skip the Republican National Convention.
Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots officials have declared a mandatory evacuation of its barn area in advance of Tropical Storm Isaac, which is expected to become a hurricane as it moves into the northern Gulf of Mexico.
The evacuation applies to about 700 horses currently stabled at Fair Grounds, as well as all workers.
For the duration of Hurricane Gustav, WWNO will broadcast network programming. We are doing this so that our staff and their families may safely evacuate. We will return as soon as possible after the storm.
Best Wishes For Everyone's Saftey, Paul Maassen WWNO GM.
