SLU offers makeup for movies class

Southeastern Louisiana University's Division of Extended Studies is offering a non-credit course on makeup for filmmaking.

Available for high school students and adults interested in the film industry, the course will be taught by Tara Bennett, a freelance makeup artist with experience in makeup for photography, film, and theatrical stage.

The course is scheduled on the university's main Hammond campus on Wednesdays from 6-8 p.m. from Sept. 12- Oct. 10. The cost is $125, which includes all materials needed, and one continuing education credit will be awarded.

Registration set at Nunez College

Registration begins Wednesday at Nunez Community College in St. Bernard Parish. Fall-term classes are scheduled to start on Aug. 20.

UNO to lead study of shellfish along Gulf Coast

University of New Orleans researchers are getting federal money to study shrimp and crab populations over the 120 miles of coast between Lake Borgne in Louisiana to Mobile Bay in Alabama.

On Thursday, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management announced funding the $1.2 million five-year study of blue crabs, brown shrimp and white shrimp.

Researchers will track the abundance and distribution of the shellfish with the aim of understanding fluctuations in their populations and to see how they recover from disasters.

Jindal names cabinet secretary to LSU board

Gov. Bobby Jindal has tapped one of his cabinet secretaries to also be on the governing board for LSU.

Jindal's office announced Tuesday that Natural Resources Secretary Scott Angelle was the governor's newest appointment to the LSU Board of Supervisors.

Angelle, from Breaux Bridge, is a member of Jindal's closest circle of advisers. In addition to his cabinet post, Angelle is the governor's chief legislative lobbyist and the administration's liaison for federal oil and gas permitting issues.

Greg LaFleur claims breach of SU contract

An attorney claims Southern University breached the contract of then-Athletic Director Greg LaFleur when it announced, three days after his arrest on a misdemeanor prostitution charge, that LaFleur had been fired.

A Houston jury acquitted LaFleur on the charge earlier this year.

LaFleur was arrested April 3, 2011, and on April 6, 2011, Southern announced that he had been terminated.

LaFleur attorney Scott Wilson argued Monday to state District Judge Todd Hernandez that Southern breached LaFleur's contract because the university had no cause to fire him.
