New Orleans, La. – Just under 344-thousand people live in New Orleans. That's down about 11-thousand from estimates.
Allison Plyer of the Greater New Orleans Community Data Center says Census numbers gathered in a door-to-door drive last year are considered the gold standard for tracking population. Those numbers show a city still coming back from Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and the region shrinking 11 percent.

New Orleans, La. – Superintendent Serpas says the police department is reaching out to theVietnamese and Spanish-speaking communities. Representatives of the Congress of Day Laborers told Serpas at a community meeting that people suspected of traffic and minor offenses are being arrested and held - sometimes for weeks -- for Immigration and Customs Enforcement authorities.

New Orleans, La. – Silt is building up on the bottom and sides of the river channel leading to the Gulf of Mexico. The Army Corps of Engineers says budget cuts mean less dredging can be done. Port of New Orleans President Gary LaGrange (la-grahnj) says public agencies and maritime businesses are pressing Congress for more money.

New Orleans, La. – Mayor Landrieu says two organizations are signing on to run Memorial Hospital when it reopens in New Orleans East. The Franciscan Mission of Our Lady will run the hospital. Daughters of Charity will be in charge of clinical operations. He says it could take more than two years for the 80-bed hospital to reopen, but highlighted other signs of public and private investment.

New Orleans, La. – The St. Bernard Project founded in 2006 has rebuilt nearly 350 homes with help from 29-thousand volunteers. It expanded to help some residents in Orleans Parish, mostly in Gentilly and New Orleans East. Now the group is targeting the Lower Ninth Ward, where about 24 percent of the neighborhood is back, compared with 80 percent for most of the city. M.A. Sheehan is in charge of the new program, called, "House the Nine."

New Orleans, La. – Mayor Landrieu says city police will work in conjunction with prosecutors and other law enforcement agencies to reduce the crime rate that he says is unnaturally high. Standing with the police chief, sheriff, district attorney, U-S attorney and others, he said last year's murder rate of 175 people is virtually unchanged from 2009.

The city of New Orleans is giving notice to residents living in FEMA trailers that it's time to move. Eileen Fleming reports the city wants the trailers issued after Hurricane Katrina five years ago to be removed.
