New Orleans, La. – Mayor Nagin had big plans for the auditorium damaged by Hurricane Katrina. He envisioned a combination of uses for the building, making room for digital media, a culinary academy involving Leah Chase, and other cultural uses. Here's how he described it last year to supporters gathered at Dooky Chase restaurant:
New Orleans, La. – The mayor-elect was asked at a news conference last week about when owners should consider doing more to their property damaged in Hurricane Katrina than boarding up and cutting the grass. "Now would be good." Landrieu said he would be asking the Louisiana Recovery Authority to funnel unallocated federal money on clearing blight. Landrieu takes office in May.
Haiti – Doctor Fred Wilson of New Orleans practiced as an orthopedic trauma specialist after Hurricane Katrina, and again in Haiti after the earthquake. He said that both disasters had "colossal screw-ups" in coordination, most recently hampering earthquake relief.
