Attorney General to announce NOPD reforms

Attorney General Eric Holder on Tuesday will announce a federal consent decree to require sweeping reform of the long-troubled New Orleans Police Department.

A person with direct knowledge of the plan, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the agreement had not yet been made public, says Mayor Mitch Landrieu will join Holder for the announcement Tuesday afternoon in New Orleans.

The reforms — with oversight of a federal judge — are expected to be some of the broadest and strictest ever imposed on a police department.

Ex-New Orleans cop pleads guilty in theft from nonprofit

A former New Orleans police detective has pleaded guilty to conspiring to steal funds from a nonprofit group that assists homeless families.

Federal prosecutors say 36-year-old Tiwana Alexander resigned from the department on the eve of her guilty plea Friday to a conspiracy charge.

Alexander faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Police snag alligator thief after nighttime street chase

One of the suspects in last week’s brazen gator burglary was arrested last night after a chase through the Central Business District, according to New Orleans police.

A police sergeant spotted 29-year-old Rodney Thornton pulling on the door handles of parked cars in the 900-block of Poeyfarre Street at about 9:45 p.m. last night. When the officer approached Thornton, Thornton broke and ran, leading police on a chase that ended with his apprehension in an empty lot.

Officers witnessed Thornton pull a gun from his waistband and drop it on the ground during the chase.

Warrants issued for Audubon alligator theft

New Orleans police have issued arrest warrants for two men suspected of stealing a bin of baby alligators from the Audubon Zoo gift shop.

Police say Audubon Security discovered the gift shop’s doors pried open, and a broken window near the shop’s bottom door latch, around 7:30 a.m. last Wednesday, just over three hours after receiving an alarm from the location. A check of the shop revealed 10 baby alligators missing from a tank within.
