Wife of ex-congressman's brother dies

The sister-in-law of former U.S. Rep. William Jefferson has died after suffering a severe head injury at her home.

John Gagliano, investigator for the Orleans Parish Coroner's Office, says Sandra Peters Jefferson died early Saturday at the Interim LSU Public Hospital. She was hospitalized there Friday with an unspecified head trauma.

Man Sought in Ex-Wife's Death Surrenders

MANDEVILLE, La. (AP) — The ex-husband of a woman whose body was found in St. Tammany Parish Sunday evening has surrendered to Calcasieu Parish authorities

Capt. George Bonnett says investigators had a warrant accusing Calvin Jefferson of second-degree murder of 31-year-old Nicole Jefferson.

Jefferson surrendered late Tuesday, about six hours after the sheriff's office announced the warrant for his arrest.

Body of Unidentified Female Found Near Covington

COVINGTON, La. (AP) — St. Tammany Parish authorities are working to identify a woman's body found along Interstate 12.

The body was discovered Sunday afternoon near Covington.

WWL TV reports (http://bit.ly/Jb5uxp ) the identity of the body is unknown, but officials with the St. Tammany coroner's office said the body is that of a female.

Police Buying Guns in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — New Orleans police will be buying guns from citizens who want to dispose of them on May 12 at the Little Zion Baptist Church.

The program, in partnership with the Greater New Orleans/Jefferson Gun Buyback Committee, will start at 9 a.m.

The church is at 4821 Earhart Blvd.

Police say they will pay $75 for handguns and $200 for assault rifles in a no-questions-asked effort to get guns off the street.

Patrons Grabbed Gunman After Club Shooting

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — New Orleans police say nightclub patrons grabbed a man after he shot another patron and they held him until officers arrived. Police say 25-year-old Marcos Tulio Montes was booked in the death of an unidentified man yesterday morning at the Mimosa Dancing Club in eastern New Orleans.

One OPP escapee still being sought after slipping under fence Saturday night

Inmates at the Temporary Detention Center sleep in dormitory-style bunks.

One of two inmates who escaped from Orleans Parish Prison Saturday is back in custody, though authorities were still searching for the other earlier today, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Sherrick Brumfield, 27, who was awaiting trial on second degree battery charges, remains free.   Reginald Young, 22, was being held on armed robbery, kidnapping, and other charges. Young surrendered to authorities at 2:13 a.m. Sunday.
