A split in the Democratic Party’s base is on full display this primary season.

Voters who back progressive candidates like Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders could push the party further left, alienating moderate Republicans who are looking for an alternative to President Trump in the general election.

Moderate Democratic voters are looking at candidates like Pete Buttigieg, Senator Amy Klobuchar, Joe Biden and Michael Bloomberg as a presidential nominee who may not satisfy the progressive wing of the party but could appeal to a wide swath of Independents, Republicans and other centrists.

In this installment of 1A Across America, we speak to voters who represent the Democratic Party’s wide-ranging base this primary season.

Is it possible to unite the Democratic Party ahead of the general election? Which candidate could do it?
