9 LSU Students Have The Mumps

LSU officials say nine students have contracted the mumps as of Monday afternoon.

Nine Lousiana State University students have been diagnosed with the mumps, and the school said today that number is up from last week.

All but one of the sick students live off campus in Baton Rouge. Spokesman Ernie Ballard says the on-campus resident is being quarantined for two weeks.

Mumps is a contagious disease caused by a virus. According to the Centers for Disease Control it typically starts with a fever, headache and achy muscles. Most people develop painfully swollen salivary glands.

The LSU Student Health Center in Baton Rouge is offering free vaccinations for students.
