For more than 30 hours, Shell Chemical, in Norco, experienced elevated flares, shooting flames and thick black smoke into the air above St. Charles Parish.

On this week's coastal news roundup, WWNO's Tegan Wendland talked with  Sara Sneath of NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune about chemical releases in St. James Parish, barrier islands, and coral reefs.

Support for the Coastal Desk comes from the Walton Family Foundation, the Coypu Foundation, the Greater New Orleans Foundation, and local listeners.
