While 1,727 people are still hospitalized for Covid-19 in the state, cases in the New Orleans area are decreasing more quickly than anywhere in the country.
According to a new analysis from the New York Times, the New Orleans area had 9,343 new cases of COVID-19 over a two week span that ended one week ago. As of Thursday, that number had dropped to 3,936 new cases in the last two weeks. That represents a drop of 426 cases per 100,000 people -- making it number one in a list of the country’s metro areas.

The list only included metro areas with more than 50,000 people and at least 100 cases.
The Times analysis also tracked where the number of new deaths are decreasing most quickly. New Orleans was number 4 on that list, after Greenfield Town, MA (1), Albany, GA (2), and Pittsfield, MA (3).
New Orleans saw 485 new deaths due to COVID-19 during the two week span that ended last week. But in the last two weeks, it has seen 427 new deaths. That represents a decrease in 4.6 deaths per 100,00 people in the last week.
The Times analysis still lists the New Orleans metro area as one of the hardest hit areas in the country so far, with 11.96 confirmed cases per 1,000 people to date, and 0.69 deaths per 1,000 people.
