Governor John Bel Edwards has declared a state of emergency in Louisiana as Tropical Storm Gordon continues making its way into the Gulf Coast.

The storm is expected to become a hurricane before it makes landfall Tuesday. Its projected path moved further east on Monday, putting Mississippi and Alabama under a hurricane warning. A tropical storm warning is in effect for much of Louisiana’s southeastern coast.

But at a press conference Monday evening, Governor Edwards said that doesn’t mean Louisiana is in the clear, “because just a small shift of the track towards the west will bring those warnings into Louisiana,” he explained.

The Governor is warning residents to take caution.

“The threat of severe weather continues to exist for Louisiana," he said, "and it is critically important for everyone to remember that this storm has every possibility to track further in our direction.”

200 national guard troops will be stationed in southeast Louisiana starting Tuesday morning.

Heavy rain and possible flash floods remain a concern in the southeastern part of the state, where tropical storm force winds could be felt as soon as Tuesday afternoon.
