Sinkholes and potholes are a big problem all over New Orleans. There are a number of reasons why, but mainly: the land is sinking due to natural subsidence; and the infrastructure is aging. The city works to fix big problems as they arise – like the giant sinkhole downtown earlier this year – but it’s a seemingly endless problem. The Landrieu administration recently secured $2 billion from the federal government to update roads and infrastructure.
WWNO is hosting a public tour of Uptown sinkholes. Tulane scientist, Alex Kolker, will lead the tour and answer questions about how the sinkholes were formed. New Orleans Advocate politics reporter Jeff Adelson will be on-hand to answer questions about the city's plans for road repairs. Geoscientist Elizabeth McDade will be available to discuss the role of tectonic plates and geophysics.
The tour will begin at 4pm on October 22nd at Lyon’s Park and end with an open discussion (or just beers) at Nola Brewing Company around 5:30.
