Public Library To Host U.S. Poet Laureate

The New Orleans Public Library will host a celebration of the arts with a reading and book signing with United States Poet Laureate Natasha Trethewey on Thursday, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. at the Main Library, 219 Loyola Ave.

Trethewey, a Gulf Coast native, is a Pulitzer-Prize winning poet and the 19th U.S. Poet Laureate. Dedicated to recovering the Gulf Coast, Threthewey will share her themes of race, history, personal experiences and politics with the people of New Orleans.

Trethewey is the author of ThrallNative GuardBellocq’s OpheliaDomestic Work and Beyond Katrina: A Meditation on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Her poems have been featured in such journals and anthologies as American Poetry Review, Callaloo, Kenyon Review, The Southern Review, New England Review, Gettysburg Review and The Best American Poetry. She is also the Robert W. Woodruff Professor of English and Creative Writing at Emory University and the State Poet Laureate of Mississippi.

“It is such an honor to visit my beloved Gulf Coast and present my poetry to the vibrant people of New Orleans,” said Trethewey. “The New Orleans Public Library is the most appropriate backdrop to share my love of the arts and literature with the New Orleans community.”

“We are honored to showcase Ms. Trethewey, the U.S. Poet Laureate, at the New Orleans Public Library,” said Charles Brown, executive director of the Library. “Bringing together the great minds of our colorful city in celebration of the arts is what we’re here for.”
