This week on The Reading Life: Susan talks with New Orleans architect Lee Ledbetter, whose new book is “The Art of Place: Lee Ledbetter Architecture and Interiors.”

Here’s what’s on tap in the literary life this week

Here in New Orleans:

  • Octavia Books presents New York Times bestselling novelist, Renee Ahdieh, discussing her novel “The Beautiful” with her editor, Stacey Barney, Tuesday, October 15, at 6 p.m. at Octavia Books. This is a ticketed event; tickets available at Octavia Books.
  • Historian Carolyn Kolb concludes the series “The History of Jefferson Parish,” with part 6 — “Jefferson Parish in the Recent Past and Today: Parks, Artists, Writers and Government,”  Wednesday, October 16, at 7 p.m. at the West Bank Regional Library, 2781 Manhattan Blvd., Harvey.
  • The Latin American Writer Series presents Peruvian writer Gabriele Wiener interviewed by Gabriela Aleman, Thursday, October 17, at 5:30 p.m. at the Stone Center, 6801 Freret, Tulane University. This interview will be conducted in Spanish.
  • Robert Brantley discusses and signs “Sacred Ground: Cemeteries of New Orleans,”  Thursday, October 17, at 6 p.m. at Octavia Books.
  • Garden District Book Shop presents an evening with Chef Sean Brock in conversation with Chef Kelly Fields, discussing his book, “South: Essential Recipes and New Explorations,” at New Orleans Culinary & Hospitality Institute (NOCHI), 725 Howard Avenue, October 17 at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at Garden District Book Shop.
  • Five local poets – Whitney Mackman, Karen Maceira, Deb Jannerson, Kathleen Balma and Gina Ferrara – read and discuss their work Thursday, October 17, at 7 p.m. at the East Bank Regional Library in Metairie.
  • Dogfish presents Lisa Pasold and Rodrigo Toscano reading from their work, Thursday, October 17, at 7 p.m. at 2448 N. Villere.
  • Today’s guest, Lee Ledbetter, discusses and signs “The Art of Place: Lee Ledbetter Architecture and Interiors,” Friday, October 18, from 6-8 at the New Orleans Museum of Art as part of Friday nights at NOMA.
  • There will be a Writers Clinic Saturday at the East Bank Regional Library in Metairie. Novelist Jean Redmann discusses “Structure” at 9:30 a.m., followed at 11 a.m.  by “Book Project Templates” with Traci Andrighetti, author and translator.
  • Jax Frey discusses and signs her book, “The Gumbeaux Sisters,” Saturday, October 19, at 1 p.m. at Garden District Book Shop.

  • Paula Arai discusses and signs her book, “Painting Enlightenment: Healing Visions of the Heart Sutra,” Sunday, October 20, at 1 p.m. at Octavia Books.

The Reading Life in 2010, Susan Larson was the book editor for The New Orleans Times-Picayune from 1988-2009. She has served on the boards of the Tennessee Williams/New Orleans Literary Festival and the New Orleans Public Library. She is the founder of the New Orleans chapter of the Women's National Book Association, which presents the annual Diana Pinckley Prizes for Crime Fiction.. In 2007, she received the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities lifetime achievement award for her contributions to the literary community. She is also the author of The Booklover's Guide to New Orleans. If you run into her in a local bookstore or library, she'll be happy to suggest something you should read. She thinks New Orleans is the best literary town in the world, and she reads about a book a day.
