After Katrina, FEMA pledged nearly $2 billion to rebuild New Orleans schools. But that doesn't cover maintenance and repairs.
The Orleans Parish School Board decides Tuesday whether to support a new measure that would redirect property tax revenue to take care of school buildings.
Caroline Roemer Shirley is Executive Director of the Louisiana Association of Public Charter Schools, one of the groups backing the measure.
"We have an opportunity to ensure that the $2 billion that have been invested in schools continue to preserve that legacy," she said. "We're building beautiful schools and this is an effort to take care of those long term for not just current students but students of the future.
But The New Orleans Advocate reports some school board members worry the measure grants too much power to the Recovery School District.
Most funding will go directly to individual charter operators, but some will help set up an RSD office to oversee repairs.
If the School Board approves the measure, it will show up on the ballot this December.
