T-Boy The Nutria Predicts Spring Is Right Around The Corner

Audubon Zoo

Up in Pennsylvania, Punxsutawney Phil may have seen his shadow, sending shivers down many a meteorologist’s spine and presaging six more weeks of winter — but here in New Orleans we have more, er, refined methods of predicting the weather.

Audubon Zoo’s T-Boy the Nutria emerged from his hole in a mockup of the Uptown Carnival parade route, surveyed the rutted streets and construction barricades, and (according to his handlers) proclaimed a problem-free Mardi Gras and a bountiful crawfish season.

T-Boy is a year-round resident of the Audubon Zoo, 6500 Magazine Street.

The National Weather Service's New Orleans office predicts rain and chilly temperatures this week, but expects conditions to dry out and warm up before this weekend's parades.

Jason Saul served as WWNO's Director of Digital Services. In 2017 he took a position at BirdNote, in Seattle.
