Bring Your Own is a live storytelling pop-up series that takes place in living rooms, backyards and other intimate spaces within the community. Each month, seven storytellers have 7 minutes to respond to a theme.
In today’s world, having an online profile page to represent yourself — whether it’s on Facebook, LinkedIn, or OkCupid, is commonplace. But this story, from the local storytelling event Bring Your Own, harks back to the retro time of social media, when these digital IDs were still uncharted territory.
New Orleans-based writer, actor and spoken word poet Gian Smith first told this story live on April 15, 2013 at the Old Firehouse on Mandeville Street; the theme of the evening was "Jackpot", and Gian spoke about discovering the wonder that was social networking in the mid-1990s, and just how he made his mark.
*Bring Your Own is a production of Laine Kaplan-Levenson, Liam Daniel Pierce, and Nina Feldman. The next BYO is will be Thursday, August 1 (location TBD); happy hour at 7:30 p.m., stories at 8 p.m. For more information go to bringyourownstories.com.
