New Orleans residents have been frustrated that the city hasn't distributed sandbags to protect their homes and property ahead of Tropical Storm Barry, as in storms past. But New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell said the city decided not to hand them out this time because sandbag distribution strains resources and the sand could clog up the city's drainage system.

No sandbags have been issued for the public to protect their homes and businesses in New Orleans ahead of Tropical Storm Barry, according to an unidentified spokesman for the New Orleans Fire Department.

The city of Scott will distribute sand bags at the maintenance building, located at 118 Lions Club Road, until 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The Advertiser reports residents who pick up sand bags must live within the corporate limits of the city of Scott and will be required to show identification.

Washington Parish is making sandbag locations available to residents starting at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday. The locations are:

  • Bogalusa Ave B Sports Complex
  • Bogalusa Cassidy Park, 625 Willis Ave, Bogalusa LA
  • WP Fire District #7 17380 Bill Booty Road, Bogalusa La
  • WP Public Works #1 – 801 Pearl St, Franklinton, LA
  • WP Publc Works #2 – 7 Mile Rd & Hwy 10 (Yacc Bldg)

Terrebonne and Lafourche parish governments are making sandbags available to residents as Tropical Storm Lee approaches.

St. John to offer sandbags today at 10 a.m.

Sandbag locations in St. John the Baptist Parish will open Monday at 10:00 a.m., the parish announced in a press release.

Sand and bags will be available at the following locations:

  • Fire Station #53 at 1703 St. Andrews Blvd. in LaPlace
  • Fire Station #94 at 1200 Hwy. 643 in Pleasure Bend
  • Fire Station #65 located at 337 Central Avenue in Reserve
  • Fire Station #71 at 418 Historic West St. in Garyville
  • Old Second Ward High School at 3671 Highway 18 in Edgard

Residents are asked to bring a shovel to fill their bags.

St. Tammany Parish will open five sandbag stations from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday, August 27 at the following locations:

  • Covington Barn, 1305 N. Florida St., Covington
  • Keller Barn, 63131 Fish Hatchery Rd., Lacombe
  • Koop Drive, 21411 Koop Drive, Mandeville (under Tammany Trace water tower)
  • Airport Road Barn, 34783 Grantham College Rd., Slidell
  • Fritchie Barn, 63119 Hwy 1090, Pearl River
