Nine children were injured Wednesday morning when a school bus carrying students for James M. Singleton Charter School overturned on the I-10 high rise. The driver was apparently driving without a permit.

Parents at Mary McLeod Bethune Charter School have been frustrated for weeks with the school’s unpredictable bus service. Now, the school says, a bus driver left several children at the scene of an accident Monday.

After a city investigation revealed serious safety concerns about school buses last year, the New Orleans City Council decided to start inspecting them. But more than a month into the school year, more than 80 percent of the city’s school buses have yet to pass inspection.

New Orleans' unique system of charter schools does not have centralized busing. Each school is in charge of finding bus services for students, and those services are almost always contracted out to private bus companies. After a city investigation revealed a host of safety concerns around the city’s privately operated school buses, the city council is stepping in to regulate them, similar to the way the city regulates taxis and limos.
