New Orleans, La. – BP says its riser-pipe design that initially failed has been connected to a broken pipe and is diverting oil. It says it will be days before they know how much is being recovered. BP is sticking with the estimate of 210,000 gallons of oil leaking daily, although scientists reviewing images of the leak say it could be nearly 3 million gallons a day. Researchers in Florida are heading out to check if the underwater oil has hit loop currents that swirl near the Keys and up the East Coast. Also, scientists from several universities are finding plumes of oil up to 10 miles long and 3 miles wide in deep waters in the Gulf. BP has resumed hosing chemical dispersants on the oil as it leaks, a process that may be breaking up the oil into bits too small to float quickly to the surface.
