New Orleans, La. – Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen says more oil is heading toward wetlands.
"We have seen the oil change direction. It was generally heading east to the panhandle of Florida. Because of wind conditions and current we now see oil start to enter Mississippi Sound and areas around Chandeleur and Breton Sound. We're very concerned about that. We're moving forces there as we speak."
Allen says the storm is not expected to create conditions that would require evacuating the containment project and getting vessels to safe harbor. Allen says if gale force winds over 40 miles-an-hour develop, ships would be disconnected from pipes siphoning oil from the leaking well. That could mean oil again spilling freely into the Gulf for two weeks while the system is reassembled after the storm passes.
