New Orleans, La. – Starting in September, 20 students from Gentilly Terrace Elementary School and 20 selected from citywide auditions will be learning music on Saturdays at UNO's Performing Arts Center. They'll be learning from UNO staff, as well as the school's Jazz Institute. Kicking off the announcement was the institute's artistic director, trumpeter Irvin Mayfield, who said all aspects of music will be taught.
Associate Dean Andre Perry says students will have an impact on what they learn.
The Saturday Music School is also partnered with Capital One-UNO Charter Network. The Gentilly Terrace Elementary Schoool is operated by the Recovery School District with UNO. The school will cover traditional New Orleans music, as well as theory and appreciation.
