New Orleans, La. – The Jazz and Heritage Festival combined its second annual Day of Service this week to benefit Habitat for Humanity's Musician Village in the Ninth Ward, and Tipitina's Foundation program to provide children with musical instruments. Repair technicians dressed in medical scrubs donated a day to repair musical instruments that had been donated through Tipitina's.
Jazz and Heritage Foundation board president Ron Sholes watched the technicians after he'd worked on a Habitat house, dabbled with evidence of the painting he'd been doing.
Branford Marsalis brought along a technician he uses when he's home in North Carolina, and pitched in with some entertainment.
Delfeayo Marsalis offered some pointers and demonstrations of technique to students in marching bands.
Jazz and Heritage Foundation spokesman Scott Aiges (Aye-gis) says instruments that aren't fixed at the event will get a prescription for what repairs are needed, and what it will cost.
