The Reading Life with Josephine Sacabo

This week on The Reading Life:  Photographer Josephine Sacabo, whose two beautiful new books are “Lux Perpetua,” inspired by Sor Juana Inez de la Cruz, and “Beyond Thought,” inspired by Clarice Lispector.   Sunday at noon, Tuesday at 1:30, and Wednesday at 8 on WWNO.

  • James Nolan reads from and signs “Nasty Water: Selected New Orleans Poems,” Sunday, November 25, at 3 p.m. at Maple Leaf Bar.
  • Walt Handelsman, author of “I’m Drawing As Fast As I Can,” Chris Champagne, author of “Secrets of New Orleans,” and Mike Strecker, author of “Jokes for Crescent City Kids,” discuss and sign their books as part of the Louisiana Literati series, Tuesday, November 27, at 7 p.m. at the East Bank Regional Library in Metairie.
  • Dalt Wonk discusses his new story collection, “Spiritual Gifts,” Wednesday, November 28 at 7 p.m. at Garden District Book Shop.
  • Bruce Spizer, an internationally recognized authority on the Beatles, will discuss the 50th anniversary of The White Album,Wednesday, Nov. 28, at 7 p.m. at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 West Napoleon, Metairie.
  • Sally Asher signs “Mermaids of New Orleans” and Poppy Tooker signs “Pascale’s Manale: A Family Tradition,” Sunday, December 2from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30pm. Historic New Orleans Collection.
  • And get ready for Improvisation: New Orleans’ Gift to the Modern World: A Tricentennial Conference, November 30-December 3, at various locations throughout the city. The conference is an outgrowth of Randy Fertel’s book, “A Taste for Chaos: The Art of Literary Improvisation,” and will gather together writers, musicians, theaters and storytellers for workshops and master classes as well as other performances.   •  Also coming up: The National World War II Museum presents the 2018 International Conference on World War II, November 29-December 1. Among the many authors appearing are Rick Atkinson, Sir Antony Beevor, whose new book is “The Battle of Arnhem: The Deadliest Airborne Operation of World War II,” James Holland, Keith Lowe, Margaret MacMillan, Donald Miller and Andrew Roberts, author of “Churchill: Walking with Destiny.” For reservations and tickets, check out nationalww2museum.org.
The Reading Life in 2010, Susan Larson was the book editor for The New Orleans Times-Picayune from 1988-2009. She has served on the boards of the Tennessee Williams/New Orleans Literary Festival and the New Orleans Public Library. She is the founder of the New Orleans chapter of the Women's National Book Association, which presents the annual Diana Pinckley Prizes for Crime Fiction.. In 2007, she received the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities lifetime achievement award for her contributions to the literary community. She is also the author of The Booklover's Guide to New Orleans. If you run into her in a local bookstore or library, she'll be happy to suggest something you should read. She thinks New Orleans is the best literary town in the world, and she reads about a book a day.
