Tropical Storm Isaac slammed Haiti with heavy rain and strong winds. Although the damage is less than feared, the country is still trying to rebuild after the devastating 2010 earthquake. Amtrak is canceling two days of train service in Louisiana because of Tropical Storm Isaac, which is expected to become a hurricane before hitting the northern Gulf Coast on Wednesday.
The rail service says that on Tuesday and Wednesday, the Crescent's route will end in Atlanta and the Sunset Limited's in San Antonio, Texas. The action is because of the possibility of torrential rains, floods and damaging winds. There won't be alternate transportation on the routes.
Ticket holders can get a refund or a voucher for future travel.
The New Orleans Public Library is announcing the temporary closure of all library locations in Orleans Parish due to Tropical Storm Isaac.
At this time, all locations — Main Library, Algiers Regional Branch, Alvar Branch, Central City Branch, Children's Resource Center, East New Orleans Branch, Cita Dennis Hubbell Branch, Rosa F. Keller Branch, Martin Luther King Branch, Milton H. Latter Branch, Norman Mayer Branch, Mid-City Branch, Nix Branch and Robert E. Smith Branch — will be closed Monday, August 27 and Tuesday, August 28.
The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development has suspended toll collections at LA 1 in Leeville and the Crescent City Connection (CCC) US 90B in New Orleans to facilitate evacuation, emergency and protective services, the department said in a press release Sunday.
The toll suspension is in response to the declared state of emergency caused by Tropical Storm Isaac, the agency said. DOTD will notify the traveling public when tolls resume.
Republicans have decided to delay the official start of their presidential nominating convention until Tuesday. Tropical Storm Isaac is causing weather-related issues around Tampa, Florida. As the convention is about to begin, polls show GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney is tied with President Obama.
Florida has so far been spared the worst of Tropical Storm Isaac. Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana cannot be so sure. If the storm stays on its current course, it threatens to hit Louisiana seven years to the day after Hurricane Katrina arrived in New Orleans. NPR's Greg Allen is tracking the storm.
