Two Years Later: How Far Are Military Women From Combat?

By the end of the year, women will know what kind of combat roles they’ll be able to fill in the U.S. military. That’s the deadline for the leaders of each military branch to recommend whether to open up all combat jobs to women, or restrict some of them.

It’s been two years since the Department of Defense changed its policy, and since then, each branch of the military has implemented its own training standards and assessments to collect data for the final decision.

NPR’s Pentagon Correspondent Tom Bowman spoke with women going through the process and joins Here & Now’s Robin Young to talk about how it’s going, both at the ground level and at the top.
