This week President Barack Obama is facing multiple international crises, among them the group that calls itself the Islamic State and the ongoing situation in eastern Ukraine.

President Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel are meeting today at the White House following the chancellor’s trip to Russia over the weekend to try to work up a peace deal.

Also this week, the president plans to ask Congress for further authorization for use of military force against the group that calls itself the Islamic State. NPR’s Ron Elving joins Here & Now’s Peter O’Dowd with details.
