Florida Ex-Felon Fights To Keep His Right To Vote

Former felons in Florida are continuing to fight for their voting rights.

In June, the state enacted a law that requires all former felons to pay their fines and fees to be eligible to vote. This new law, which has been temporarily blocked by the courts, comes on the heels of Florida voters’ 2018 decision to restore political franchise to an estimated 1.4 million former felons.

Here & Now‘s Tonya Mosley speaks with Pastor Clifford Tyson, a former felon and plaintiff in a lawsuit challenging Florida’s new fines and fee law.

The Brennan Center for Justice, the American Civil Liberties Union of Florida and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund are co-counsel in the lawsuit. Pastor Tyson is a client of the Brennan Center.
