New Orleans officials are celebrating news that more corporate jobs are heading to the city. They say it’s a major break from more traditional, lower-paying tourism jobs that have been anchoring the city economy.
General Electric financial services division will be hiring 300 people in New Orleans, mostly in information technology and software development. Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal says salaries will range between $60,000 and $100,000 a year.
“These are the type of jobs we want our children and grandchildren to aspire to. And now they don’t have to go to Austin or Atlanta or Houston. They can stay here right at home.”
Mayor Mitch Landrieu says GE’s decision could have a major effect on local economies.
“This is a big win. This is a game-changer for the city of New Orleans and the state of Louisiana.”
Jindal says the GE center is expected to create 300 new indirect jobs. The corporate office is set to be fully operational in 20-15.
