New Orleans Submits Legislative Agenda To Baton Rouge

New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu has released his wish list for the current session of the State Legislature. Items requested by City Hall include a tax increase for public safety and a more aggressive approach to clearing blighted property.

Mayor Landrieu is also asking for state support of plans to ask New Orleans voters for more police and fire department funding, with a bill that would allow an ad valorem tax. Voters could decide that matter in a November election.

Landrieu is again asking for a change to the firefighters’ pension fund: a bill would increase the minimum retirement age while the city would pay into a pension and relief fund.  He’s also asking for the city to have permission to cut weeds and high grass on blighted property and bill the property owner.

And Landrieu wants the state to fund his plan to convert the shuttered Charity Hospital into a civic center.
