New Orleans Police Department cordon off Magazine Street after a woman was killed by a parade float.

New Orleans police say a woman was struck and killed by a parade float last night as the city celebrated Mardi Gras.

Witnesses say the woman tried to cross between a tandem float, which has two sections that are connected in the middle, according to the Associated Press. She reportedly tripped over the hitch connecting the two sections and was run over by the back half of the float.

The accident happened Wednesday night during the Krewe of Nyx parade. The rest of the floats in the parade were diverted after the collision. The woman hasn't been identified.

The Times-Picayune |The New Orleans Advocate reports float Number 20 became the final float in the parade. Numbers 21 and beyond were rerouted back to the krewe's staging area.

Marching bands and other walking and dancing troupes were re-routed because of the accident.
