Senator Landrieu Defends Her Bipartisan Record

Office of Senator Mary Landrieu

Democratic U.S. Senator Mary Landrieu is acknowledging her opponents’ efforts to link her with President Obama. But Landrieu is standing by her bipartisan record.

Senator Landrieu is depicted by opponents as a stalwart ally of President Obama, who is increasingly unpopular in Louisiana. When asked about that portrait at a televised debate Monday night, she said she stands by her support of the Affordable Health Care Act — the most prominent plank of the White House platform.

But she says Cassidy also supports most of the president’s agenda. And she blasted his absence at the debate. Tea Party candidate Rob Maness called Landrieu a ”rubber stamp” for the Obama agenda. But Landrieu argued she’s fought with the president on several issues, including the ban she backed on late-term abortions. She said if she loses this close contest, she will not blame the president.

There will be a debate Wednesday night where all three candidates are scheduled to appear. If no one wins a majority November 4, a runoff will be held December 6.
