This week on The Reading Life: Susan Larson talks with Dr. Gordon “Nick” Mueller, president and CEO emeritus of the National World War II Museum, about his new book, "Everything We Had: D-Day, 6.6.44."

Here in New Orleans:

  • The Pirate’s Alley Faulkner Society presents Meet the Author with Thomas Mallon, author of “Landfall,” Maurice Ruffin, author of “We Cast a Shadow,” and Rodger Kamenetz, author of “Yonder,” Sunday, March 10, from 2-4 p.m. at the Cabildo. Free but RSVP to faulkhouse@aol.com.
  • Ken Wells discusses and signs “Gumbo Life: Tales from the Roux Bayou,” Monday, March 11, at 6 p.m. at Octavia Books.
  • There will be readings  by poets Andrea Young, Khaled Hegazzi, Jessica Bordelon Maeshel, Dennis Formento, Jonathan Penton and Paul Catafago.
  • and a performance by No Frets celebrating the life and work of poet Mahmoud Darwish, Monday, March 11, from 7-9 p.m. at the Zeitgeist Theater and Lounge’s new location, 6621 St. Claude Ave. in Arabi.
  • Four featured writers perform in the Why There Are Words series first quarterly reading, Wednesday, March 13, at 6 p.m. at Octavia Books. The theme is “Transformation,” and the featured writers are Allison Alsup, Randy Bates, Julia Carey, Vincent Celluci, Ladee Hubbard and Mark Yakich. The event is curated and emceed by Liz Green. Suggested donation at the door.
  • Jessie Morgan-Owens discusses and signs “Girl in Black and White: The Story of Mary Mildred Williams and the Abolition Movement,” Wednesday, March 13 at 7:30 at the Dogfish Reading series at the Dragonfly, 3921 St. Claude Ave.

  • Maxine Gordon appears with Fred Kasten to discuss and sign “Sophisticated Giant: The Life and Legacy of Dexter Gordon,” Thursday, March 14, at 6 p.m. at Octavia Books.
  • The Friends of the Jefferson Public Library hold their Big Book Sale March 14-17, 2019, at the Pontchartrain Center, Williams Blvd. at the Lake, in Kenner. Hours are Thursday through Saturday (March 14-16) from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday (March 17) from noon to 5 p.m.
  • Bestselling authors Dhonielle Clayton, author of “The Belles: series and COO of We Need Diverse Books, and Zoraida Cordova, author of the Brooklyn Brujas series and The Vicious Deep trilogy, will hold “teen chats” at Jefferson Parish Libraries on Saturday, March 16. The first is from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.  at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 West Napoleon Avenue, Metairie.The second session occurs from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the West Bank Regional Library, 2751 Manhattan Blvd., Harvey.
  • Jack Bedell, Ray Ball, and Karen Maceira are the featured readers at the Poetry Buffet, hosted by Gina Ferrara, Saturday, March 16, at 2 p.m. at the Latter Library.
  • And get ready for that big literary weekend in New Orleans, March 27-31, when The Tennessee Williams/New Orleans Literary Festival takes place March 27-31, along with the Saints and Sinners LGBTQ Literary Festival March 29-31 at the Hotel Monteleone. Some of the writers coming to town include Dorothy Allison, Jami Attenberg, Bryan Batt, Donna Brazile, Doug Brinkley, Maureen Corrigan, Michael Cunningham, Samantha Downing, Judy Grahn, Garth Greenwell, Justin Phillip Reed, Felice Picano, Bryan Washington. In Baton Rouge:

  • Bestselling author Greg Iles discusses and signs his new novel, “Cemetery Road,” Friday, March 15, at 6 p.m. at Barnes & Noble, Citiplace in Baton Rouge.
  • Delta Mouth Literary Festival, a partnership with the Louisiana State University Department of English, The Southern Review, New Delta Review, and the English Graduate School Association, takes place April 5-7 at Louisiana State University. free and open to the public, the festival this year will be held April 5-7. The lineup of writers includes Jos Charles, Tia Clark, Jerika Marchan, Megan McDowell, Carrie Messenger, Thirii Myint, Dennis James Sweeney and Jeannie Vanasco. Check out deltamouth.comfor the complete schedule.

Susan Larson
The Reading Life in 2010, Susan Larson was the book editor for The New Orleans Times-Picayune from 1988-2009. She has served on the boards of the Tennessee Williams/New Orleans Literary Festival and the New Orleans Public Library. She is the founder of the New Orleans chapter of the Women's National Book Association, which presents the annual Diana Pinckley Prizes for Crime Fiction.. In 2007, she received the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities lifetime achievement award for her contributions to the literary community. She is also the author of The Booklover's Guide to New Orleans. If you run into her in a local bookstore or library, she'll be happy to suggest something you should read. She thinks New Orleans is the best literary town in the world, and she reads about a book a day.
