  • Dr. Catherine Baucom was stuck in a massive traffic jam caused by an accident in Baton Rouge, La. TV station WAFB reports she borrowed a seven-year-old girl's bike. Baucom, wearing a green surgical outfit, pedaled for miles to surgery on a small pink bike with a pink princess helmet.
  • The post office is stuck with hundreds of millions of stamps bearing the likeness of Homer Simpson. The service predicted the stamps would be twice as popular as Elvis Presley. One billion stamps were printed, and Bloomberg reports only 318 million have been sold.
  • The incident outside the landmark building ended with the gunman's death. Nine other people were injured, according to Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
  • British retirees Rachel and Paul Chandler were sailing in the Indian Ocean in 2009 when their boat was hijacked by Somali pirates. They were held captive in Somalia for more than a year. Guest host Viviana Hurtado speaks to the couple about their experience, which they documented in the memoir Hostage: A Year at Gunpoint with Somali Pirates.
  • A gunman opened fire outside the Empire State Building on Friday, shooting and wounding several people. The Associated Press reported that the gunman had recently been fired, and that he shot a former colleague to death.
  • The university reports it will exceed its enrollment goal as the fall term begins. Still, new students and their parents have some pragmatic questions about how the scandal will affect them.
