COX traces the growth of the religion from its origins in a converted stable in Los Angeles in 1906 to its present membership of 410 million worldwide. COX is a professor of divinity at Harvard Divinity School, and the author of "The Secular City."
  • in Georgia, backing Bob Dole for President and local candidates for the House and Senate races. The group's membership is up 25-percent from last year and experts say their efforts could be significant in a close race. A poll by the Atlanta Constitution shows President Clinton leading Dole by 15 points...the biggest gap in any southern state.
  • Robert talks with Ralph Reed, Jr., the director of the Christian Coalition. The Coalition is directing most of its resources toward the retention of a Republican majority in Congress, and election of state and local candidates who support the conservative ideals of the Coalition's membership. Reed says that this retargeting of Coalition resources does not mean that they've written off Bob Dole's chances of election, or that they don't support a Dole candidacy...but that their focus has always been on state and local politics and grass-roots involvement in political issues.
