President Obama attended two private fundraisers in New Orleans before addressing the start of the National Urban League meeting at the Convention Center. He reassured his most ardent supporters that his policies haven’t changed, and asked for continued support.
President Obama didn’t mention his Republican political rival by name. He outlined the programs he’s backing, such as expanded health care and greater access to affordable education. He says the country is set for economic growth.
“We have all the ingredients to make the 21st Century the American Century, just like the 20th. What’s holding us back is a stalemate in Washington between two fundamentally different views about which path we should take as a country.”
Obama noted a large section of students toward the back of the auditorium. He pointed to them and promised the country will help them with a higher education, but they have to work harder than other students around the world.
“They’re not hangin’ out. They’re not gettin’ over. They’re not playing video games. They’re not watching ‘Real Housewives.’ I’m just saying it’s a two-way street. You’ve got to earn success.”
He ended his half-hour address with a call to keep working hard, even when times are hard — something he says New Orleans knows all too well.
