GMO stands for "genetically modified organism", and is the result of a lab process where genes from the DNA of one species are extracted and artificially forced into the genes of an unrelated plant or animal. These foreign genes come from bacteria, viruses, insects, animals and even humans — seriously.
This genetic engineering technology was developed in the 1970s, but it wasn’t until the late '90s when gene-splicing began, with the tomato being one of the earliest modified agricultural products. So it’s time to ask: Are they safe??
Put it this way: in 30 other countries around the world, including Australia, Japan and every single country in the European Union, there are either significant restrictions or outright bans on the production of GMOs because they are not considered safe for human consumption.
