Bring Your Own is a live storytelling pop-up series that takes place in living rooms, backyards and other intimate spaces within the community. Each month, seven storytellers have 7 minutes to respond to a theme.
This story was told by Abe Handler, co-founder of Nolawiki, a collaborative encyclopedia about New Orleans. Abe was recorded live on October 21, 2012 at artist Jackie Sumell’s house in the 7th Ward, and the recording was later produced by Natalie Yahr. The theme of the evening was "Are You Afraid of the Dark", and Abe told of the temptation in his post-collegiate struggle to find a career, and what he found instead.
*Bring Your Own is a production of Laine Kaplan-Levenson, Liam Daniel Pierce and Nina Feldman. The next BYO is will be Thursday, August 1 at the Old Ironworks in Bywater; happy hour at 7:30 p.m., stories at 8 p.m.
