A proposed property tax increase to beef up police and fire protection in New Orleans passed through a House committee without objection today.
The bill is a proposed constitutional amendment to raise ad valorem taxes in Orleans Parish. The increases would amount to an extra $30 per year in taxes on a $200,000 house. For the city, the increase would bring in an additional revenue of nearly 6 million dollars in 2015.
The measure will be put up for statewide vote in November. New Orleans voters would also have to approve the measure before it becomes law.
