The Green Minute: Myths Of Recycling, Part Two

Welcome to part two of the myths of recycling (here'spart onein case you missed it).

Don’t keep a lid on it! That’s right. Plastic caps and lids are small and difficult to sort. They also keep liquids and other contaminants inside the plastic containers. So trash the lids and make sure your plastics are fully cleaned before placing them in your recycling bin.

But, not all plastics are created equal. That kiddie car your son no longer plays with cannot be mixed in with recycling, even if it is made of plastic. Plastic toys and odd things just wind up taking the long way back to the landfill. Donate that gently used toy to a thrift shop or put it on Craigslist, but don’t include it with your recycling.

And check this out — you don’t need to remove labels. Ha! Bet you didn’t see that one coming. It’s a small step, but hopefully one that will save you a bit of time. Labels are fine right where they are.

I know, so many "who knew?" moments when it comes to recycling in NOLA! We’re back next week with more mythbusting.
