An estimated 33% of Louisiana residents are Black, yet the state only has one majority Black congressional district. While legislators are gearing up to draw new congressional maps, the NAACP Legal Defense Fund has threatened to sue if lawmakers don’t pass a plan with two majority-Black districts. Redistricting counsel for the NAACP, Kathryn Sadasivan, tells us more about how these Republican-proposed congressional maps could limit the voting power of Louisiana’s black residents.
When immigrants come to the U-S seeking asylum, they go through an interview to determine if they will be allowed to stay. But for those who speak less common languages, getting this interview in their native tongue can be a challenge. The Gulf States Newsroom's Bobbi-Jeanne Misick has the story of two asylum seekers facing this problem.
